 Joyful
   (Tacloban Tales)

Wind came up and blew the houses down.
Waters rose.  I thought that we would drown.

I don’t have much.
What I have is yours.
Waltz between homes through open doors.
Welcome in.

Juggling babies in the air
flying through drying underwear
with a big grin.

Breathe and be.
While we still live let’s live life joyfully.
Joyful, joyful, joyful.

Trouble and strife
but who’d deny we live a joyful life?
Joyful, joyful, joyful.

Homes soaked
Furnishings flood choked
in thick mud cloaked
fears of blood stoked
then came looting,
sometimes shooting.
Food and drink were none.

The blether of the weather
serves to tether us together
and our lungs fill.
Our hearts beat still.
No more need to run.

Steep is the hill and slow the climb.
Short is our breath, tortuous the time before us.
Nearing the top, now not too far.
Up on the peak the panorama’s glorious.

Typhoon’s eye.
Who knows why we survive when thousands die?
Awful, awful, awful.

Live.  Don’t think.
Pore through the chores but with a joyful wink.
Joyful, joyful, joyful.

Throw your arms in the air.
Jump up and down while shouting “yeah yeah yeah”.
Joyful, joyful, joyful.
